Bennett, 60, whose day job is in telecommunication equipment sales for
Inter-Tel Technologies, 1140 W. Loop North, in Houston, has been
painting ever since she was a student at Milby High School.
"That really started off in high school with some art classes," said
Bennett, a grandmother of 10. "I painted a picture that ended up traveling
across the country with artwork from some other students, and that kind
of sparked something in me."
She attended Sam Houston State University where she earned a degree
in home economics, following in the footsteps of her mother, who was
an interior designer.
While Bennett herself enjoyed a stint as an interior designer in the
former family business, she continued to dabble in painting.
She mostly focuses her efforts now on watercolor still life, but there was
a time when she enjoyed oil landscapes — one of which she said is
hanging at Prosperity State Bank in Hempstead.
Her latest work can be found at the 2411 Strand Gallery in Galveston.
"Customers like her use of color and her subject matter," said Teresa
Ouellette, store owner. "Betty is a very bold artist, and she just absolutely
loves what she does."

Area woman fuses culture into artwork
League City's Betty Bennett enjoys using ethnic folk art
By KIM HUGHES
Chronicle Correspondent
League City resident Betty Morgan Bennett loves the brightness of
primary colors, and she also is a huge fan of the African-American culture.
So she's combined them to create a series of folk art featuring elongated,
brightly-colored ethnic women carrying urns, baskets or bowls.
"I love the dress, the music, the fashion and turbans ... stuff like that,"
Bennett said. "I've always been fascinated with collecting
African-American things, and I just kind of incorporated it into my artwork."
